Wreck This Journal: Week 2

Journal wrecking commenced last Friday. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read the Week 1 post about the Wreck This Journal book blogging group.)

The journal in its current state

The journal in its current state

When I told my husband about the book, he looked at me like I was crazy. Then he opened it. He read every page with increasing excitement and asked if he could play too.

Suddenly and vivaciously he chucked the journal across the room and proclaimed, “it said to make a destructive unpredictable movement with the journal so I threw it!”

I love this man.

Here is the destruction that ensued this week…

  1. A walk in the rain.
  2. Tea bag staining.
  3. Fuji apple sticker added.
  4. Water-colored the home page, which subsequently bled through to the other side. Bonus!
Water-color and swirl punches on the title page

Water-color and swirl punches on the title page

  5. Wrote my name in various pencils, chalks, and markers.
  6. Page numbering, starting with 42. Because I can. (If you read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, you know why 42.)
Page numbering (not starting at one- where would the fun be in that?)

Page numbering (not starting at one- where would the fun be in that?)

  7. Chewing.
  8. Circled the letters of my name in the warning message.
  9. Punched swirl and heart shaped holes in intro.
  10. Sewing. Beads. I even sewed one page to another with a string of beads hanging between them.
Sewing pages (together) with beads for splashes of color

Sewing pages (together) with beads for splashes of color

  11. Office supplies: post-it, sticky colored flags, business card, paperclips, staples, highlighter, white-out.
  12. A couple of throws.

In these first steps I learned that I really limit myself. So far my destruction is fairly clean: “pretty” water-coloring or containing page destruction to the center portion of the pages. I’m defacing a book, but whether it can be called destruction is debatable.

My husband found me using decorative punches to cut shapes in the first few pages. He wanted to help so I handed him the journal and a swirl punch. Part way through, the punch got caught in the paper. My husband tugged and pulled and twisted the punch to try to free it from the page. I cringed and winced. Then I realized that was entirely the point. He didn’t just one-up me. He blew right by. My journal now has a proud crumply torn bit right on the title page.

I guess I need to work on my destruction skills (though I’m trying to keep the book in decent condition until I mail it to myself). I foresee a long battle ahead. Whether that is a literal battle against the book or a metaphorical battle within my mind remains to be seen.

Watch for the Friday post on The Next Chapter: Wreck This Journal site to see how the rest of the group is doing.

Happy wrecking!

I actually laughed out loud at the top of my lungs and then had to explain to my Husband why I was laughing so loud! He said “thats a Hannah kinda thing to do!” I’m sure thats good somehow! (I found your blog thanks to Twitter :D)

Pink Heels – My inner child is having a blast! I think she is still very reined in though. I’ll work on that.

Hannah – Are you part of the fun? (If not, it’s not too late!) Thanks for following the Twitter!

Isn’t it really amazing to see what limits we have on ourselves! The food one was a big deal for me. You know the “use this page as a napkin!? Wow, really? I did it though. And it’s fun to see remnants of that fantabulous meal in my book! Here’s to crumpling and ripping and generally destructing :)
Looooove that you’ve sewn in beads!!! Brilliant!
    Miracles,
    k-

What wonderful wreckage! I love seeing all the places you’ve played and stretched and turned this book into something new! How wonderful that your husband is playing along too.

One of my favourite things so far about WTJ has been creating memories with people. I think this is going to be the summer of Wreck this Journal. What mischief shall we get up to?

I can SO relate to the limitation factor…..*sigh*…the idea of actually ripping things out…ACK…working on it, though….:)

    happy wrecking!!

I have that problem too with trying to break away from keeping everything neat, it took a while for me to get around to the ripping strips page. I won’t even buy a hard bound sketch book because I know I’ll rip pages out and I hate how that looks. I really like the idea of taking the book in the shower but I think that will have to one of the last few, so that if it falls apart it won’t be a problem.

    Excellent missions accomplished!
Your journal is looking pretty wrecked! Keri would be proud.

I too have been keeping my destruction limited to creative destruction. Oxymoron? it always has to be PRETTY. I need to work on just uh… fricking it up. (I don’t want to curse on your blog, but I really mean the OTHER F word.)

Is your husband getting his own book or is he just helping you?

    i guess we all are.
it’s such a treat to see how differently and
variously each of us confront the pages.

Adore the beads sewn in – I’ve been thinking about that sewing page and beads occurred to me also. What a fabulous beginning you’re off to!

I’ve just begun and I’m finding that it’s harder than I thought…letting go. But oh so freeing! And reading your response (and your husband’s) is so inspiring!

Thank you all so much for stopping by and commenting! It’s great to be sharing this adventure with all these fabulous people.

Sharon- Of course! Go ahead and steal whatever you would like. Enjoy!

Mother Henna- Wow! You did the food one? I’m scared of that, too. Jamie is challenging us to pick the page that is scariest and do it. That may be the one.

Jamie- Tons of mischief. Hooray for mischief!

Mel, Jessica, Wro- It definitely helps to have so many other people sharing this experience. I feel a little less silly and maybe I’ll even muster up more courage.

Bohemian Mom- Love the evil laugh!

Rowena- My husband is sharing my book. Yesterday he told his brother to go buy one for their son. His brother bought 3 copies. I guess one for everybody!

Magpie- Can we sing that like Pink? “So what! I’m still a wreck star!”

Anandaleeke and Sheila- I figured with white thread, I needed something to help it stand out.

Carmen- Nice to meet you too!

Rachel- Thank you! All in good fun.

Karen- Letting go is harder than I thought, too. I wonder how we will change throughout this process.

Haha, love the difference of clean wrecking and just going with it! I’m a clean wreck as well, but hoping I’ll get over that soon. That is awesome that your husband is joining along!

  23. Friday, June 12, 2009 at 3:34 pm

It looks so great. I’m so inspired that I will try some different mediums and objects this week in my wrecking.

My friend decidded to do the journal throwing page. She threw it straight at me, and now I have a bruised arm. But it was worth it!

  25. Friday, June 12, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Your husband sounds great! I, too, threw the book across the room in a sudden, unpredictable move. Nothing happened to the book, but I did hit a sauce pan which fell off the stove (luckily, nothing was in it). I love how you numbered the list…and chewing is my favorite. I’ll have to try that today! Looking forward to connecting more on this crazy journey!!

I’m thinking that this would be a great gift to hide away until your husband’s birthday or some other gift giving celebration.

Your sewing is so fun! I love to see others sink their teeth into pages I’ve been putting off.

    Wonderful wreckage, and lovely post.

I’ve never seen so many comments! I thought I had better say something too or feel left out! My fave was the sewing page – very inventive! I’ve had some fun with stains going through pages and making interesting new pages too.

    You have been busy wrecking!

I think I saw a tweet or two that you had mailed it…have you gotten it back yet? Was it stressful waiting for it to arrive?
